My Grandmother was raising 13 children during the Depression in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Wild forage is what kept food on the table. My grandfather and my older uncles took deer, squirrels, rabbits and wild turkeys every chance they got but my Grandmother also made flour from the plentiful acorns that were widely available too. She made a flat bread with the flour that she served to the youngest children with a splash of milk (just to wet it - which could have easily been breast milk because Granny always had a baby on her hip) and the older kids got it with a drizzle of wild honey or with a half teaspoon of wild violet jelly that she canned from flowers the kids would collect from the yard or from the roadside ditches on their 5 mile walk to & from school. Another popular lunch meal was wild apple & onion sandwiches with the flat bread too, or sometimes w/o the bread, just the whole veggie or fruit wrapped in a piece of cloth and carried in their pockets. My mother told many stories of only having a raw potato in her pocket for lunch and of pinching other raw veggies (like peas & radishes) from neighbor’s gardens as she and her brothers & sisters passed by on their way to school because they were hungry and had to leave the house with only a hot tea like broth for breakfast for the girls…..older boys got more because (the thinking was) they needed more strength to also do chores on the farm before & after school.

Only one thing had to go wrong to kill Grizzly man, and that is to think that he was accepted as one of thier own, and have the delusions of him being able to be alone with them unarmed or prepared for the worst, in the first place.
